Independence Day is celebrated every year on 15 August 1947 in India as a national holiday to commemorate the country's independence from the United Kingdom, the day the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947, which transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly, had come. In effect. India retained King George VI as head of state until it was converted into a full republic, when the nation adopted the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950 (celebrated as the Republic Day of India) and the Dominion Prefix, Dominion Of India, replaced by the Sovereign Law Constitution of India. After independence movement, India attained independence and became widely known for non-violent resistance and civil disobedience.
Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which British India was divided into the religions of India and Pakistan; The division was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties and displacement of about 15 million people due to religious violence. On 15 August 1947, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. On each subsequent Independence Day, the incumbent Prime Minister gave an address to the nation by raising the flag. [1] The entire program is broadcast by Doordarshan, the national broadcaster of India, and usually begins with the shehnai music by Ustad Bismillah Khan.
